Matru Arudha

Arudha is an essential concept in Vedic Astrology. The Arudhas in the birth chart show how various aspects of our life are perceived in the outside world. It is helpful to study Arudhas to understand how our relationships, goals, actions, and our entire persona is perceived across the veil of Maya. It tells us how the outside world sees us.

Depending on the configuration in your chart this perception may be close to who you really are inside or completely divergent. In this article I will focus only on the Matru Arudha or A4. We will cover other Arudhas in subsequent articles.

Matru Arudha can shed some light on the aspects of the person’s mother, their home, and general experience with physical and emotional shelters. To find out further about each of these aspects the Matru Arudha needs to be studied along with other indicators. For example, to find more about the Mother of the native, we need to analyse the Chara Matrukaraka, the fourth house and its lord, and most importantly the state of the Moon, the sthira matrukaraka in the birth chart.

Some positive combinations for the Matru Arudha:

·        In Trine (1,5,9) or Kendra (1,4,7,10) position when counted from Arudha Lagna

·        Close conjunction and aspect with Trine lords and Kendra lords

·        Lord of Matru Arudha neutral or friendly towards lord of Arudha Lagna

·        Exalted lord, in own/friendly sign lord of Matru Arudha

·        Conjunction of Matru Arudha with A2, A5, A7, A9, A10, A11

·        Lord of Matru Arudha close conjunction with a friendly planet

Some negative combinations for the Matru Arudha:

·        In 6, 8, 12 position when counted from Arudha Lagna

·        Close conjunction and aspect with 6th, 8th, 12th lords

·        Lord of Matru Arudha enemies towards lord of Arudha Lagna

·        Debilitated lord or combust lord, in enemy sign lord of Matru Arudha

·        Conjunction of Matru Arudha with A6, A8 and to a lesser degree A3, UL

·        Lord of Matru Arudha close conjunction with an enemy planet

Example Chart 1:

Arudha lagna AL is in Virgo and Matru Arudha A4 is in Gemini. Both are lorded by Mercury. A4 has Jupiter in it.

Positives:

a)      A4 is in quadrant from AL

b)     A4 is Aspected by Mercury its own lord

c)      AL and A4 have same lord

d)     A4 is conjunct with A5, A9, and A10

Negatives:

a)      Lord of A4 is debilitated

b)     A4 is aspected by Mars lord of 6th house

The native’s relationship with mother and their home environment will be average. It will be full of chatty, routine conversation, lots of mundane talking. There will be wealth and opulence in the home environment but also conflict shown by aspect of Mars from Virgo, a feeling of now hot now cold. Emphasis on competition and the need to win. Mother’s internal mental argumentation exerts pressure on the child. The fourth lord from Lagna is debilitated adding to the negative influence to home environment and mother.

Example Chart 2:

Matru Arudha A4 is in sixth house in the sign Aquarius. It is in the 10th house from Arudha Lagna AL. Lord of A4 Saturn is with Ketu in 2nd house Libra, and co-lord Rahu is in Aries in the 8th house.

Positives:

-        A4 is in Quadrant from AL

-        Co-Lord of A4 Saturn friendly towards lord of AL Venus

-        Co-Lord of A4 Saturn is exalted

-        A4 is conjunct A2

Negatives:

-        A4 is aspected by 6th Lord Rahu in Aries, 8th Lord Mars Cancer

-        Conjunction of co-lord of A4 with Ketu

The mother, and home environment will emphasize that native should focus on wealth generation. There will be a friendly relationship between the native and mother. However, there will also be a feeling of dissatisfaction and emotional distance. A feeling that the native can be abandoned. Elements of aggression and conflict in the home. The fourth lord from Lagna and Moon Jupiter is also debilitated in Capricorn, mother is focused on over-expansion in society and rank.
